Gas-thieving trucker traveling in rogue big-rig raises flag

EMPORIA, Va. (WTVR) – The general manager of a Florida truck stop said the trucker who stole $1,500 worth of fuel from a Virginia truck stop hit her business too.

The manager of Simmons Travel Plaza in Emporia, off Interstate 95 near the Virginia-North Carolina line, said a truck driver pulled up to the pumps Sunday, spent 25 minutes filling multiple fuel tanks and then drove off without paying the $1,500 tab.

CBS 6 was curious how the truck is getting by with so many interstate weigh stations and licenses required for truckers.

Typically, a big rig has a series of letters and numbers stuck onto both sides.

“The name and DOT number are required,” said Tom Maxwell, with the Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Unit. “This is a fuel permit they have to have this and this is another state, Kentucky, they do this specific, this is Ontario, so they can run out of the country.”

Truckers say they’re the back bone of this country, hauling more than 67 percent of the freight, and here on Interstate 95 — which cuts across the eastern United States — as many as 31,000 traverse the road on any given day.

And most, officials said, have the proper identification.

“He makes it bad for the guy that’s out there trying to do the right thing,” said Tyrone Calhoun, professional truck driver.

Security cameras shows that the truck driver in question pulled off the heists with no information on the sides.

“We don’t see that often,” Maxwell said.

Some drivers, like Mike Slansky, prefer to give trucks without identification a wide berth.

“You never know what they’re up to, or who they are or what they are hauling,” Slansky said.

While it’s not often you see a big truck with no name or numbers, it may not be illegal, but it can raise a red flag. Especially if they try to bypass a weigh station.

“It could be hours of service, it could be equipment, licensing problems,” Maxwell said.

The fuel theft still has truckers calling both truck stops, if they spot a similar rig.

“The truck drivers out there are still looking for him, they are bothered by the whole incident, just like everybody else,” said Tony Moore, Simmons Travel Center.

EMPORIA, Va. – Church leaders plan to rebuild after a large fire damaged Calvary Baptist Church on Main Street in Emporia, Virginia.

Fire crews were called to the church about 6 a.m. Saturday. Hours after the church went up in flames, smoke could be seen billowing into the air.

“I was in the back of my cabstand cleaning my cab out and I saw the smoke coming from the building,” said James Robinson.

That’s when James Robinson jumped in his cab and alerted police. His company is a block away.

“I went inside and told the dispatcher that the building — he church was on fire,” said Robinson.

The church is located on Main Street, across the street from the Emporia Police Department and near a fire house, so emergency response to the fire was quick.

Robinson shot cell phone video of the flames as it consumed the back of the church.

“It was sad you know to see a church on fire,” said Robinson.

Fire officials said the blaze started on the third floor, and it appears to be some type of electrical malfunction.

“It’s just been a long ordeal. They’ve been battling it all day long. They had units here from Lawrenceville and Jarratt,” said Ken Royals, Emporia Emergency Services Coordinator.

After the fire was brought under control, work crews tore down the fire-damaged back portion of the 108-year old church

“The back part of the church is totaled. The walls will be there. They’re going to have to tear it down to the ground level and start rebuilding,” said Royals.

No one was injured in the fire.

Longtime church member Don Mountjoy who has been a member of the congregation for 20 years.

“It’s just heartbreaking to see this… It’s hard to comprehend something like this happen. A close knit community like this,” said Mountjoy.

And while church members gather waiting on word from authorities, Robinson is thankful he spotted the flames before it was too late.

“I hope things work out for them…especially the church… We need all of our churches…you know…operating…you know… because now a days without the Lord you’re lost,” said Robinson.

Church leaders cannot yet say how much it will cost to rebuild, but told CBS 6 News that they plan to hold Sunday service at a nearby park until fire officials wrap up their investigation.

EMPORIA, Va. – Greensville County Sheriff’s investigators and K9 units searched for Niesha Keices-Lynn Powell, 11, for about 14 hours Tuesday.

Deputies took neighbors to headquarters for questioning, after  Powell vanished from her trailer home off Green Plains Road around 8:00 Tuesday morning.

Her mom told deputies she saw her daughter at 7:45 a.m. but fell back asleep.

At nine, her mom told deputies she noticed the trailer door open and Niesha nowhere to be found.  Even more startling, and strange, family members say Niesha wasn’t wearing her shoes.

Her family says investigators ran tracking dogs that sniffed out Niesha’s scent all the way to a creek that straddles the Sussex/Greensville county line.

By evening, Niesha had been missing for 14 hours.  Her father Kevin Bradley got word of his eldest daughter’s disappearance late Tuesday morning and drove six-and-a-half hours from the shipyard where he works in South Carolina to come look for his little girl.

“It was real emotional, man, not knowing what’s going on with my daughter or if I’d ever see her again,” Bradley said.  “It really hurts me.”

This is a developing story…..

EMPORIA, Va. — An Emporia doctor respected by the community turned himself in, lost his license and now faces four felony charges.

Dr. Herman Alphia Garrett III is accused of taking narcotics form a local hospital. Officials said it isn’t his first offense, he’s been in trouble in other states.

Emporia Commonwealth Attorney Patricia Watson says it all began when officials at the Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center became suspicious of Dr. Garrett. They started an internal investigation to see “Whether he was in possession of narcotics he should not be in possession of.”

From there, Emporia Police were called in to begin their own investigation.

“When he left the hospital, it’s our indication that he took a box — it’s called a surgical box — with him and in that surgical box, contained several different narcotic medications,” Watson says.

doctor

Dr. Garrett turned himself into Emporia Police and now faces four felony charges and two misdemeanors.

“He has three Felony Possession of Scheduled I and II Charges, he has one Procurement of Drug Felony Charge and several misdemeanors,” explained Watson.

He is currently out on bond, and his first court appearance is October 10.

“I can’t believe it, because of how nice he was” says Threasa Moore, from along Main Street in Emporia.

Moore had taken her mother to Dr. Garrett on several occasions, and like many had recently heard rumors he wasn’t at the hospital.

“He was really a nice nice man, I had no problems with him,” she says. “He explained everything, all the procedures he was going to do and everything.”

This isn’t the first, or second time, that Dr. Garrett has lost his license.

In 1991, he was placed on medical leave due to chemical dependency, while a resident at Georgetown.

In 1992, Dr. Garrett was convicted of DUI in Georgia.

In 2001 he lost his license to practice medicine in Kentucky.

He later lost his license to practice here in Virginia.

But that was reinstated in 2005, court documents also show.

GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. — Nearly 20 years after he was killed in a crash on a Virginia highway, investigators may now have the information they need to identify a teenager known for decades simply as “Grateful Doe.”

The Virginia Medical Examiner released an image of what "Grateful Doe"might have looked like before he died in June 1995.

The Virginia Medical Examiner released an image of what “Grateful Doe”might have looked like before he died in June 1995.

The unclaimed and unidentified body was given the name because the teenager was wearing a Grateful Dead t-shirt and carrying Grateful Dead concert ticket stubs in his pocket at the time of the fatal crash on Route 58 in Emporia. He also had a note on him addressed to “Jason.”

Over the summer, the Virginia Medical Examiner re-released an image of what “Grateful Doe”might have looked like before he died in June 1995. Two years ago, Internet users investigating the case on their own created a Grateful Doe Facebook page. The grassroots effort helped determine Grateful Doe could be Grateful Dead fan Jason Callahan.

This week, a woman in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina filed a missing person’s report for her son, named Jason Callahan.  The mother said she had not heard from her son since 1995, according to a report on CarolinaLive.com. DNA tests have been ordered in an effort to confirm whether or not the woman is in fact the mother of Grateful Doe.

“I am just waiting for everything to be put together to see if it is my son, to see if it is a positive match,” the mother, who asked not to be identified, told WPDE TV in Myrtle Beach.

This is a developing story.

EMPORIA, Va. — A man who was unhappy with the level of care he received at a South Central Virginia hospital decided to call to express his dissatisfaction, but it is what he is accused of saying that has him facing up to 10 years behind bars.

The phone call came in about 10:20 p.m. Friday to Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center. The person on the other end said that there was a bomb in the hospital, according to Emporia Police Chief Rick Pinksaw.

After relaying the information to police, the phone log was pulled and officers made a startling discovery.

“An alert hospital staff worker stated that that was the phone number for Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids,” said Pinksaw.

While Virginia State Police brought in two bomb dogs, an Emporia police detective met a Roanoke Rapids officer at Halifax Regional.

“Our detective went to the hospital, was able to make a phone call to the number that came into the hospital. And as he was going into the room, the phone was ringing in the room with the suspect,” Pinksaw said.

Police said 57-year-old Joseph John Urbancik then admitted to making the phone call.

“The defendant came to our hospital here, tried to receive services, they denied his services, he was not happy with that,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Patricia Watson said.

Watson said Urbancik now faces prison time if he is convicted of making the bomb threat.

“It’s a serious felony charge, it’s a Class 5 Felony, which means he can get up to 10 years in prison,” Watson said.

The Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center released the following statement to CBS 6:

“An evacuation of the hospital was not needed nor was it recommended…  There were no interruptions to patient care at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center during the brief event.”

EMPORIA, Va. – A Boston terrier’s life has improved after a police officer rescued him from a tree, where he had been left to starve.

A lot changed for the little guy in just the past five days.

He now has a foster home and warm bed, but last Wednesday, the dog now called Marvel wasn't doing so well.

Marvel was skinny and tied to a tree.

Marvel was skinny and tied to a tree.

The pup was tiny and living in terrible conditions, said Emporia Police Officer Willie Richards.

"He was real thin, there was no water, the shelter was nothing but a crate on the ground, with nothing on the top or on the sides,” he said.

Officer Richards called Animal Control when he spotted the dog, who suggested asking the owner if they would sign over the dog.

Marvel was skinny and tied to a tree

"The ultimate goal is to help the dog and in our case she was willing to sign over the rights to the animal, which was better for us in the sense, because we could immediately get the dog, we could immediately get it to the vet, immediately find it a foster home."

The owner told officer Richards that she'd only had the dog about two weeks.

He's been rescued now

"Don't blame her entirely, a lot of people get dogs that they can't financially take care of anymore, so there's always issues that arise, luckily we were able to step in and intervene,” Richards said.

The leader of a local rescue group agreed.

"You do want to see charges taken out in some case but ultimately I think everyone wants what's best for the dog,” said Amanda Sverchek, of Happy Endings Animal Rescue Team, Inc. “And in this case, I think that's what he got."

EMPORIA, Va. -- Strong Temple is an affordable fitness center where people in Emporia can shape their body, mind, and soul.

Through each sweat inducing, muscle-aching workout, owner Eugene Porter stands shoulder to shoulder with his clients.

The soft-spoken 40-year-old man is finally realizing his dream.

Eugene Porter

Eugene Porter

He opened Strong Temple along Halifax Street and across from the old Emporia Train Depot last winter.

"Every time you come in here you get a blessing," Porter said. "I love what I’m doing."

Eugene shares his passion for fitness with all who will listen.

But Eugene also insists on shedding light about his dark past.

It is a weight heavier than most people could carry.

"I don’t want to forget where I came from," Porter said. "The next thing that I knew, the police was at my door telling me that I shot somebody.”

It is a chapter Eugene is not proud of, but one he fully embraces.

"I tell everyone of my clients that I’ve been locked up," Porter said. "I don’t hide it from them. I don’t want anyone else to tell them my story."

In 1993, a then 17-year-old Eugene Porter, was convicted of murder. A crime to this day he claims he did not commit.

Eugene admits he was not the best behaved teenager.

He sold drugs, but says he would never take another person's life.

"I lost God when I went to prison at 17 because you’re going to tell me I’m going to spend the rest of my life, " Eugene said as his voice trailed off.

The tough teen grew up fast on the inside.

"It’s the simple things. I like smiling," Porter said. "For so many years I didn’t smile.”

His parole was denied repeatedly, so Eugene used his time wisely.

"First turned down. Second turned down. Third was turned down," Porter said. "It kept me grounded. I studied. I read."

Eugene buckled down, preparing for success on the outside.

In 2012, Porter was released after serving 18 of a 25-year stretch.

"Nobody expects you to make it," he said. "I was nervous about being called a murderer."

Not wanting his conviction define him Eugene left any lingering bitterness behind bars.

"I forgave the guy that lied on me," Porter said. "I forgave a lot of people and it made me a better person.”

Eugene’s tale of redemption inspires.

"It is very positive coming on the inside," friend and fitness client James Harvell said. "He weathered the storm. He made it out. You know and he made a life for himself upon coming out into society."

Eugene's clients appreciate his honesty and dedication.

"I mean it makes you want do it even more," client Connie Scott said.

Ty-Reke Bullock, 12, is learning how to box under Porter's watchful eye.

Ty-Reke Bullock

"He is just a caring person and always wants everybody to do better every day," Ty-Reke said.

This business owner is not wasting one minute of freedom, but don’t confuse his kindness with weakness.

"There will be pain. If you want anything you want you have to work hard for," Porter said.

"You have got to want it," Bullock added. "You have to believe in yourself."

Eugene is making many people take notice, including one of the most important people in his life -- his mom.

Eugene Porter

"To see the man he has become makes me want to cry. That strength is unbelievable," mother Vanessa Jackson said. "I try to tell him every day how proud I am of him. The man he has grown to be that is not a surprise."

For Eugene Porter training in Emporia has never sounded sweeter.

"I want to change people’s lives," Porter said. "I just want to keep helping people. In some shape form or fashion help people."
